Two-Factor and Multi-Factor Authentication

Authentication, or the act of confirming something (or someone) is authentic, is one of the cornerstones of security; it is critical when allowing a VPN user access to the corporate network. Strong authentication methods protect against hackers and other unauthorized access attempts.

Different authentication methods include:

- Something the user has (e.g., wristband, ID card, security token, software token, phone, or cell phone)

- Something the user knows (e.g., a password or personal identification number (PIN))

- Something the user is or does (e.g., fingerprint, retinal pattern, or voice recognition)

Two-factor authentication is mandatory for many law enforcement and government agencies and is also becoming more common in commercial enterprises. Two-factor authentication means that you need two out of the three aforementioned authentication methods; for example, in addition to a password, it requires something the user has, such as an ID card or security token.
